Election halted in Sherpur-3 following Jamaat nominee’s demise
Bangla Press Desk: The election in Sherpur-3 (Sreebardi–Jhenaigati) constituency is being suspended following the death of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami–nominated parliamentary candidate and district Jamaat secretary Alhaj Nuruzzaman Badal (51).
The matter was confirmed on Wednesday morning (4 February) by the Returning Officer and District Commissioner Tarfadar Mahmudur Rahman.
He said that Article 17(1) of the law states that if a “validly nominated” candidate dies after the deadline for withdrawal of nomination papers and before polling day, the electoral process in the concerned constituency must be cancelled immediately.
Accordingly, he added that a public notice is being prepared to suspend the election process. Once the notice is finalised, it will be officially announced, and a new election schedule for the constituency will be declared at a later date.
Nuruzzaman Badal passed away early Wednesday. He breathed his last at around 1:30am while undergoing treatment for kidney complications at Swadesh Hospital in Mymensingh, said Sherpur district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Md Hafizur Rahman.
He said Nuruzzaman Badal had been suffering from kidney-related complications for a long time.Source: daily Sun
