European leaders affirm Greenland sovereignty in joint security pact

Bangla Press Desk:   Seven European leaders issued a joint statement Tuesday asserting that Greenland’s future remains solely in the hands of its people and the Kingdom of Denmark, signaling a unified front against external interests in the Arctic region.

The leaders of France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, the United Kingdom, and Denmark identified Arctic security as a critical pillar of international and transatlantic stability. The group emphasised that European allies are increasing their presence, investments, and military activities to deter adversaries and keep the region safe.

The statement underscores Greenland's status as a part of NATO through its relationship with Denmark. It specifically highlights the 1951 defence agreement between Denmark and the United States as a cornerstone of the region’s protection.

"Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively," the leaders stated. They pledged to uphold the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of borders.

The declaration comes at a time of heightened geopolitical interest in the Arctic’s natural resources and strategic shipping lanes. By issuing this collective message, the European powers aim to reaffirm that only Denmark and Greenland hold the authority to decide on matters concerning their territory.
