Ex-CJ Khairul placed on 7-day remand over alleged verdict fabrication
  Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Wednesday placed former Chief Justice A B M Khairul Haque on a 7-day remand in connection with a case filed at Shahbagh Police Station over alleged fabrication of court verdicts, orders, and records. Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Sanaullah issued the remand order after police produced Haque before the court and sought a 10-day remand for interrogation. During the hearing, Additional Public Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon argued in favor of the remand. No defense counsel appeared on behalf of the former chief justice. Following the hearing, the court granted a 7-day remand. The case, filed by Supreme Court lawyer Md Mujahidul Islam on August 27 last year, accuses Haque of manipulating official court documents under Sections 219 and 466 of the Penal Code.
According to the complaint, Justice Khairul allegedly altered the summary order of a case under the influence of then-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, with hopes of securing a favorable post-retirement appointment. He is accused of unlawfully publishing the full verdict of an appeal on September 16, 2012, by modifying the original summary judgment delivered on May 10, 2011—allegedly to appease Hasina. Justice Khairul, who also served as chairman of the Law Commission, was arrested on the morning of July 24 from his residence in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi by members of the Detective Branch (DB) of police. His arrest comes amid a wave of legal proceedings implicating him in charges ranging from judicial manipulation and sedition to corruption and involvement in the killing of a teenager during the 2024 mass uprising.
On the same day, he was sent to jail in connection with another case filed at Jatrabari Police Station over the death of Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during an anti-discrimination protest. Justice Khairul served as Bangladesh’s 19th Chief Justice from October 1, 2010, to May 17, 2011. He was appointed Chairman of the Law Commission in July 2013 and was reappointed several times until his resignation on August 13, 2024—just a week after the fall of the Hasina-led government. Notably, just days before his retirement in 2011, Khairul led the Appellate Division bench that annulled the 13th Amendment, which had established the caretaker government system.
