Staff Reporter: The family of Bangladeshi-American police officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a gunman’s attack in New York, met with Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. On Monday (September 22, local time), at a hotel in Manhattan, the Chief Adviser offered condolences to Didarul’s father, Abdur Rob, and other family members, including his two sons, and presented them with a crest on behalf of the Government of Bangladesh in recognition of Didarul’s special contribution.
This was confirmed by Ershadur Siddique, President of the Bangladeshi American Police Association, who was present during the meeting. The Chief Adviser stated that the entire nation of Bangladesh mourned the death of Didarul Islam. He also expressed gratitude to the NYPD and other authorities for the honors they extended following Didarul’s death.
It may be noted that Didarul, originally from Moulvibazar, served with the New York Police Department’s 47th Precinct. He had been with the force for three and a half years. On July 28, he was killed along with four others in a gunman’s attack at a high-rise building on 345 Park Avenue in New York City. On July 31, he was posthumously promoted to detective, and was laid to rest in New Jersey with full state honors.
