Fears mount as law and order slides alarmingly
  Bangla Press Desk: The law and order situation in the country has become alarming as some terrible crimes, including grisly murders, were reported over the last couple of days. At least seven gruesome murders were reported in the last three days. The latest – a brutal murder of a journalist in Gazipur – reflected the overall deterioration of the law and order situation in the country. According to data from the Police Headquarters, at least 1,931 people were killed in six months from January to June 2025, which is way higher than the number reported – 1,553 – in the first six months of 2024. In such a situation, people are worried about the deterioration of the law and order situation in the country and feel a lack of security regarding their life and assets.
Professor Dr Md Omar Faruk, chairman of the Criminology and Police Science Department of Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University, believes that the law and order situation in the country has worsened further in recent days. He said that the crimes and murder incidents increased as the criminals became very active following the decrease of confidence level of the police. Moreover, the police are not getting cooperation from the people. In the last three days, a journalist was slaughtered and another was beaten in front of police, while a body was recovered in Gazipur. On the other hand, miscreants hacked a man to death in Natore and left his body beside his private car, while three bodies were recovered in Sylhet and Moulvibazar. On Thursday night, before killing the journalist in Gazipur, miscreants crushed another journalist's leg with bricks.
Locals and the police said a group of five to six miscreants slaughtered Md Asaduzzaman Tuhin with sharp weapons near Chandana Chowrasta area while the journalist was recording a video of the gang’s activities. Tuhin was a staff reporter of the Daily Protidiner Kagoj in Gazipur. After slaughtering him, the miscreants left the scene without any challenge. Many people were witnessing the incident, but no one came forward to save the victim. Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime) Taherul Haque Chowhan said they were investigating the incident seriously. Several suspects have been identified and some of them were arrested. The police are trying to arrest other culprits. Gazipur’s Basan Police Station officer-in-charge (OC) Shahin Khan said five people were detained in connection with the incident. They were being quizzed and if found linked to the case, they will be shown arrested.
Earlier, on Wednesday, another journalist, Anwar Hossain Sourav, a staff reporter for the daily Bangladesher Alo, was attacked in broad daylight while he was investigating allegations of extortion collected from battery-run and CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers in Gazipur's Sahapara area. He is currently undergoing treatment at Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in a critical condition. A video of the incident has gone viral in social media. In the video, several people are seen gathering, throwing Sourav to the ground, and beating him. A police car is visible nearby, and one cop attempts to stop the attackers. The assault continues and Sourav is eventually dragged away in front of the police. Gazipur Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mehedi Hasan said the police arrested a suspect in connection with the incident. On the other hand, a dismembered body of a 35-year-old unidentified person was found in a bag at Station Road in Tongi area of Gazipur. On Friday morning, residents noticed the suspicious bag. Out of curiosity, a few people opened it and discovered the dismembered body.
The police suspect that miscreants killed the man on the previous night, cut the body into pieces, placed the parts in the bag, and dumped it. On Thursday night miscreants stabbed to death a car driver in Natore's Lalpur Upazila around 10pm. The incident occurred on the Gopalpur–Lalpur Road near Gopalpur Mills High School. The police said the car was travelling from Bheramara to Natore's Bonpara via Lalpur. Assailants stopped the car and stabbed the driver in the neck and left the spot. The victim was identified as 35-year-old Saidur Rahman, a native of Bamangram in Kushtia’s Bheramara. The police said it seems that after getting stabbed, Saidur tried to get out of the car to save himself but he collapsed on the spot. The police recovered a knife from inside the car. Natore Additional Superintendent of Police Md Ifthe Khair Alam said several police teams were working to uncover the motive behind the killing and a person has been taken into custody for questioning. Prof Dr Md Omar Faruk said that the criminals are trying to get under the umbrella of political parties to continue their criminal activities and sometimes getting shelter from political cadres. He mentioned that the government has failed to reinvigorate the police’s confidence. To overcome the situation, he said, the government should urgently take actions to boost up the confidence of the police and engage them with the public. Otherwise this situation will not improve.
