Flights on Saudi route suspended; 22,000 passengers face hardship
Bangla Press Desk: Limited operational capacity at airports in Saudi Arabia is causing growing instability in air connectivity with Bangladesh. The suspension of successive flights has left various categories of travelers—including migrant workers, businesspeople, and Umrah pilgrims—in a difficult situation.
So far, 144 flights have been suspended, affecting 22,021 passengers. There are concerns that the suffering of these travelers could intensify if the situation persists.
According to the latest data from the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB), the suspended flights include 67 direct flights and 77 transit flights. Among the airlines operating direct flights, 28 flights by Biman Bangladesh Airlines, 10 by US-Bangla Airlines, 19 by Saudia, and 10 by Riyadh Air have been suspended.
Meanwhile, among transit flights, 30 flights by IndiGo, 7 by SalamAir, 1 by EgyptAir, 14 by Emirates, 9 by Qatar Airways, 8 by flydubai, and 8 by Air India have been suspended.
Uncertainty for Transit Passengers
The operational constraints at Saudi Arabian airports have impacted both direct and transit routes. Passengers planning to travel to Saudi Arabia via airports in other countries now face uncertainty regarding their arrival at their destinations on schedule. Consequently, many may need to alter their travel itineraries, reschedule tickets, or seek alternative flights.
However, detailed statistics regarding how many affected passengers have secured alternative flights, rescheduled their tickets, or received refunds are not yet available.
Questions Regarding Alternative Arrangements
Migrant workers traveling to Saudi Arabia for employment face the greatest uncertainty due to these flight suspensions. Failure to reach their destinations on time could lead to significant financial and professional losses. Additionally, Umrah pilgrims and business travelers may also be forced to adjust their travel plans.
In this situation, the role of the airlines in assisting the affected passengers has become crucial. It is necessary to determine how many passengers from the suspended flights have been accommodated on alternative flights, how many have had their ticket dates rescheduled, and how many refund requests have been processed. Simultaneously, it is crucial to maintain an effective system for providing regular updates to the passengers.
Coordination among the relevant agencies is also essential to ensure that the latest information regarding flight suspensions reaches the passengers and to mitigate their hardships until the situation returns to normal. However, detailed information regarding the specific measures taken by the airlines and the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) in this regard has not been made available.
The resumption of flight operations depends on the operational status of airports in Saudi Arabia. Under these circumstances, passengers are advised to contact their respective airlines to confirm the latest status of their flights before traveling.
Nevertheless, merely advising passengers to remain cautious is not enough. During such a crisis, it is imperative to ensure the prompt dissemination of information, the provision of alternative travel arrangements, and transparency in the processes for rescheduling tickets and issuing refunds. A coordinated effort by the relevant authorities and the airlines is required to address the suspension of 144 flights and alleviate the distress faced by 22,021 passengers.
