Floods ease in four districts

Bangla Press Desk: Receding rivers are bringing relief to flood-hit areas of Sylhet, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Gaibandha, the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) says.

However, the centre warned that low-lying areas in Moulvibazar and Habiganj could face temporary flooding as water levels in the Manu and Khowai rivers rise again.

In a statement on Wednesday, the FFWC said water levels in the Surma and Kushiara rivers had declined over the past 24 hours and were likely to continue falling over the next three days.

As a result, inundation in low-lying areas along the rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may improve within 24 hours.

Water levels in the Sarigowain, Jadukata, Someshwari and Bhugai-Kangsha rivers have also fallen and are expected to recede further, improving conditions in parts of Netrokona within 48 hours.

Although the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers rose over the past day, they are expected to stabilise before falling, bringing relief to low-lying areas along the Teesta in Gaibandha.

The FFWC said the Manu could reach the warning level in Moulvibazar and the Khowai in Habiganj within 24 hours, causing temporary inundation.

He added that the Teesta at Tarapur, the Kushiara at Fenchuganj and the Someshwari at Kalmakanda remain above danger level.

A fresh low-pressure area has also formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and nearby coasts.
