Folk singer Farida Parveen dies
  Bangla Press Desk: Renowned Lalon singer Farida Parveen has passed away at the age of 71 years. (Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un). She breathed her last at Universal Medical College Hospital at 10:15 pm on Saturday (13 September). The hospital’s Managing Director (MD) Ashish Kumar Chakraborty confirmed the information. The singer left behind her husband and four children to mourn her death.
Farida Parveen had been suffering from kidney complications for a long time. In recent weeks, her condition had deteriorated to the point that she required dialysis twice a week. On 2 September, she was taken to Universal Medical College Hospital in Mohakhali for her routine dialysis. However, following the procedure, her condition worsened, and physicians advised immediate hospitalisation. She was then admitted to the hospital’s ICU, where her condition remained critical. On Wednesday, her condition worsened further, and physicians decided to place her on ventilation support. Despite all medical efforts, she passed away on Saturday night.
Born on December 31, 1954, in Natore and raised in Kushtia, Farida grew up in a cultural environment that nurtured her love for music from an early age. Her father’s commitment to fostering her talent led to her first lessons in classical music. But it was a chance encounter during a Dol Purnima event in Kushtia that would shape the course of her life forever. It was there that she met Moksed Ali Shai, a prominent Lalon singer, who became her mentor and opened the door to the spiritual world of Lalon Sain's songs and philosophy. Farida began her musical journey with Nazrul and patriotic songs before devoting her life to Lalon’s works. She was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1987 for her contributions to music, and in 2008 she received the Fukuoka Asian Culture Prize from the Japanese government. She has also sung in several films and won the National Film Award for Best Playback Singer in 1993.
Nearly 16 years ago, she founded the Achin Pakhi Sangeet Academy to pass on the tradition of Lalon songs to new generations. But her ill health, rising expenses and lack of a permanent space have left the institution struggling to survive. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
