Former MP Akhtaruzzaman Sent to 3-Day Remand in Terrorism Case

Bangla Press Desk:  A Dhaka court on Monday sent former Gazipur-5 lawmaker Akhtaruzzaman to three-day remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act with Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam passed the order, said prosecution division sub-inspector Arif Reza.

Earlier, on 6 August, police produced the accused before the court after her arrest a day earlier from Gulshan. Police sought seven-day remand, but the hearing could not be held due to the unavailability of the original case records.

Later, the court sent her to jail and set Monday for hearing on the remand petition.

According to the case documents, on the morning of 18 June, around 35 to 40 leaders and activists of the banned Awami League and its affiliated bodies brought out a procession in the Tejgaon Industrial Area Police Station area.

The accused allegedly chanted anti-government slogans, detonated cocktail bombs to create panic among the public, and engaged in various anti-state activities, prompting police to file the case.

According to the remand petition, preliminary interrogation and available evidence suggest the accused's involvement in the case. Her custodial interrogation is necessary to identify and arrest other absconding suspects and gather other relevant information.
