France reeling from riots and looting; government moving towards imposing a curfew
Bangla Press Desk: In response to the violent protests and riots in France—sparked by rising living costs and fuel prices—Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu has granted mayors the authority to impose partial curfews. In the city of Marseille, public gatherings have already been prohibited between 12:00 PM and 8:00 PM.
During the unrest, rioters set fire to vehicles and buildings, and looted over 2,000 shops. A historic 19th-century city hall was also destroyed by fire. More than 2,500 people have been arrested, and approximately 1,000 police officers have sustained injuries.
President Emmanuel Macron rejected an offer of resignation from the Interior Minister, who had proposed stepping down to help bring the situation under control. The government has announced that areas damaged during the riots will be rebuilt, and that the full cost of the destruction will be recovered from those responsible for the crimes. Source: BBC
