Gazi Nazrul’s Parliamentary Seat Gets Final Decision

Bangla Press Desk:  The Parliament Secretariat has taken a final decision regarding Gazi Nazrul Islam, the Satkhira-4 lawmaker expelled from Jamaat-e-Islami over allegations of moral misconduct following the circulation of a private video. 

The Secretariat will soon send a letter to the Election Commission (EC) seeking necessary legal action against him.According to sources, Jamaat-e-Islami had written to the Speaker and the Election Commission requesting action against Gazi Nazrul Islam. In response, the Parliament Secretariat will formally write to the Election Commission.

If the EC subsequently declares the Satkhira-4 parliamentary seat vacant, Acting Speaker Barrister Kaisar Kamal will inform the members of Parliament about the matter at the next session.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said, “Jamaat has informed the Speaker about the matter and requested necessary action against him. The Parliament Secretariat’s responsibility now is to write to the Election Commission seeking legal action. The Election Commission will then formally inform the Parliament Secretariat of its decision. After that, the Speaker will inform the members of Parliament about the matter during a session.”

Earlier, on 23 July, Jamaat-e-Islami wrote to the Speaker and the Election Commission seeking necessary action against Gazi Nazrul Islam, who had been expelled from the party. Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar sent the letter.

Jamaat expelled Gazi Nazrul Islam from the party over allegations of moral misconduct after a video showing a private moment was circulated on social media. Following his expulsion, questions arose over whether he would retain his parliamentary seat.

The 74-year-old Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected as a Member of Parliament from Satkhira-4 for the third time in the latest election. He was first elected from the same constituency in 1991. He also served as Jamaat-e-Islami’s Satkhira district ameer and was a member of the party’s central Majlis-e-Shura.
