Govt moves to improve northern communication through new river ports
Bangla Press Desk: The government has officially declared two new river ports along the Jamuna River to improve northern water connectivity expanding passenger services and facilitating the development of port-based infrastructure.
The Ministry of Shipping on Wednesday issued two separate gazette notifications defining the boundaries of the newly established Sariakandi River Port in Bogura district and Dhunat River Port, covering parts of the Bogura-Sirajganj region, to boost northern water connectivity.
The two river ports have now been formally included in the official gazette.
According to the notifications, the port boundaries were determined under Section 4(1)(a) and Section 4(2) of the Ports Act, 1908, bringing the designated areas under the legal jurisdiction of the Act.
Sariakandi river port boundary
The northern boundary of Sariakandi River Port extends from Dighapara Ghat in Hatshepur Union, north of Kalitola Ghat in Sariakandi upazila, to Jamthal Ghat in Kajla Union on the eastern bank of the Jamuna River.
Its southern boundary stretches from Madhurapara Ghat in Karnibari Union to Mulbari in Narpala Mouza on the eastern bank of the river.
Dhunat river port boundary
The northern boundary of Dhunat River Port begins at the Madhurapara Ghat area in Karnibari Union under Sariakandi upazila.
Its southern boundary extends via the Jamuna River near Tekuria Hat in Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj to Beshaghir Char in Chaubar Mouza of Bhatrabari Union under Dhunat upazila in Bogura.
For both river ports, the designated port area includes land extending up to 50 yards inland from the highest flood level on both the eastern and western banks of the Jamuna River.
The gazette notifications state that Sariakandi River Port will include the existing ghats and canals at Dighapara, Kalitola, Madhurapara, Jamthal and Sonadaga.
Similarly, Dhunat River Port will encompass Chandanbaisha Ghat, Shahrabari Ghat and other existing canals and landing stations within its jurisdiction.
The notifications also state that any existing establishment falling within the declared port boundaries will be deemed cancelled if necessary to facilitate the development of navigation channels, construction of jetties and other infrastructure, and to ensure efficient passenger services.
