Hafizur Rahman Arrested Again Over Tonu Murder

Bangla Press Desk:   Retired army member Hafizur Rahman, who was arrested in the murder case of Cumilla college student Sohagi Jahan Tonu, has been re-arrested after allegedly failing to comply with an order of the Appellate Division's Chamber Judge's Court.

According to a press release issued on Saturday, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested Hafizur from his residence in Keraniganj, Dhaka, on 8 August 2026, following the court order.

The PBI said the arrest was carried out to comply with the court's directive and to prevent the accused from fleeing.

Hafizur is being sent to a court in Cumilla, the press release said.

The retired army member was initially arrested on 22 April and sent to jail custody in connection with the murder of Tonu, who was killed in Cumilla in March 2016.

He was released on 4 August after securing bail from the High Court.

However, the Appellate Division's Chamber Judge's Court suspended his bail on 6 August and directed him to surrender within 24 hours.The court also instructed the police to arrest him if he failed to surrender within the stipulated period.

The PBI said Hafizur was subsequently re-arrested from his Keraniganj residence on Saturday in accordance with the court's directive.

Sohagi Jahan Tonu, a student of Cumilla Victoria Government College, was found dead near her home in the Cumilla Cantonment area in March 2016.

The long-running murder case has attracted widespread public attention, with investigators facing criticism over the lack of a conclusive resolution for years.

The PBI is investigating the case.
