BanglaPress Desk: Initiatives are underway to restructure the central committee of the National Citizen Party (NCP). Nasiruddin Patwary, Hasnat Abdullah, Sarjis Alam, and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan are set to assume key positions in the reconstituted committee. However, the party's Convener, Nahid Islam, and Member Secretary, Akhtar Hossain, will retain their respective posts.
Party sources indicate that the list of the reconstituted committee could be released on Tuesday or Wednesday. This restructuring is being carried out based on an evaluation of the leaders' organizational activities and performance.
According to relevant sources, Nasiruddin Patwary and Hasnat Abdullah may be assigned the roles of Senior Joint Conveners in the new committee, while plans are in place to appoint Sarjis Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan as Senior Joint Member Secretaries. Through this move, the party's top leadership structure—previously known as the "Super Eleven" (comprising 11 positions)—is set to be streamlined into a "Super Six" format.
The NCP officially launched on February 28, 2025, with Nahid Islam as Convener and Akhtar Hossain as Member Secretary. Since its inception, Nasiruddin Patwary has served as Chief Coordinator, Hasnat Abdullah as Chief Organizer for the southern region, and Sarjis Alam as Chief Organizer for the northern region. Asif Mahmud, a former advisor to the interim government, joined the party prior to the 13th National Parliamentary Election and assumed the role of spokesperson.
Party sources state that the initiative to elevate these four leaders to significant positions within the organizational structure stems from an assessment of their roles regarding party formation, the national parliamentary election, and recent political issues.
Those in the top forum
Discussions with three central NCP leaders revealed that the party's highest policy-making body—the Political Council—currently consists of 16 members. The Convener and Member Secretary are ex-officio members of this council. In the restructured framework, Patwary, Hasnat, Sarjis, and Asif will also hold key responsibilities alongside them. There are plans to assign the role of joint convener to ten other members of the board. They are Abdullah Al Amin, Ariful Islam Adib, Atiqur Rahman Mojahid, Abdul Hannan Masud, Ali Ahsan Junaid, Sarwar Tushar, Akram Hussain, Salehuddin Sifat, Mahmuda Alam Mitu, and Nusrat Tabassum.
Party sources indicate that the joint conveners and joint member-secretaries will be entrusted with various organizational responsibilities. They will primarily oversee the activities of the party's associate organizations and various specialized cells.
From ‘Super Eleven’ to ‘Super Six’
The NCP's current organizational structure comprises eleven top-tier positions, including a convener, member-secretary, chief coordinator, two chief organizers, a spokesperson, two senior joint conveners, two senior joint member-secretaries, and a senior joint chief coordinator. This leadership structure is known as the ‘Super Eleven’.
Following the restructuring, there is a plan to limit the top leadership positions to six. Stakeholders state that this move aims to inject dynamism into the party's decision-making processes and organizational activities.
Discussions regarding the restructuring of the NCP's organizational framework first emerged last January, prior to the 13th National Parliamentary Election. At that time, the need to reduce bureaucratic complexities and accelerate party activities was highlighted. Plans to hold the party's first national council in early 2027 were also announced; however, the committee was not restructured at that stage.
NCP Joint Convener Monira Sharmin explained that the party initially began operations under a convener committee. As more members joined, new positions were created to accommodate them. The party now believes it is necessary to restructure this long-standing framework.
Noting that the changes are being made based on an evaluation of the leaders' performance, Monira Sharmin said that while many leaders have become pivotal through their work, others have not been as active as expected. These factors are being taken into account in the restructuring of the organizational framework.
