HC commutes death sentences of 7 in Ramna Batamul bombing case
Bangla Press Desk: The sentences of seven convicts who were given the death penalty in the murder case filed in connection with the bombing at the Pahela Baishakh celebration programme at Ramna Batamul have been reduced. Among the seven convicts, the High Court (HC) commuted one’s sentence to life imprisonment and sentenced the remaining six to 10 years in prison each. On Tuesday, an HC bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akhter announced the verdict after two decades of the gruesome attack. The HC began announcing the verdict on 8 May after hearing the appeals of the death reference and jail sentence of the accused.
The court on that day fixed 13 May for announcing the verdict on the case. The trial court has commuted the sentence of Md Tajuddin, brother of former Deputy Minister Abdus Salam Pintu, who was sentenced to death, to life imprisonment. The HC has declared the death sentence of Mufti Abdul Hannan, another accused sentenced to death by the trial court in this case, as his appeal has already been completed in another case (Sylhet grenade attack case). Mufti Abdul Hannan, another death row convict of the case, has already been hanged in another grenade attack case in Sylhet and the HC has declared his appeal closed.
The HC has upheld the verdict of Shahadatullah Jewel, one of the six convicts sentenced to life imprisonment by the trial court. Besides, the sentences of the other three convicts sentenced to life imprisonment have been reduced to 10 years in prison. The court has also declared the appeals of two convicts as they have already died. The Ramna Batamul bomb blast incident took place on 14 April 2001, which claimed nine lives on the spot.
