Heavy Rain Brings Dhaka’s Mobility Crisis Back Into Focus

Bangla Press Desk:  Every monsoon exposes the same uncomfortable truth about Dhaka: it is not the rain that paralyses the city, but the chronic failure to prepare for it. Tuesday’s relentless downpour once again laid bare the capital’s inability to cope with predictable seasonal weather, as flooded streets, gusty winds and an overstretched transport network turned the morning commute into a gruelling ordeal for thousands of office-bound residents.

Dark clouds blanketed the sky from dawn, casting an almost twilight atmosphere over the city before persistent rain set in. Despite the inclement weather, thousands of people ventured out in search of transport, many arriving at their workplaces with rain-soaked clothes and shoes.

Although umbrellas offered some protection, the combination of driving rain and strong winds left many commuters drenched from the waist down. Office workers were seen hurrying through the streets with umbrellas in one hand and bags in the other, navigating waterlogged pavements and struggling to stay dry.

Many had prepared for the weather by carrying spare clothes or opting for lightweight trousers instead of formal wear. Some planned to change into dry outfits upon reaching their offices.

Rajib Das, a private-sector employee waiting for a bus in Badda to travel to Notun Bazar, said he had packed an extra shirt and pair of trousers after seeing the morning rain.

"I wore trousers that dry more easily and brought a change of clothes in my bag. I'll change once I get to the office," he said.

Another commuter, Nahida Islam, who was travelling to Notun Bazar, said even carrying an umbrella had done little to keep her dry.

"Within a few minutes of leaving home, my clothes below the waist were soaked. I have no choice but to go to the office in wet clothes," she said.

Transport shortages compounded the hardship. With fewer buses operating, many rickshaws already occupied and long queues forming at roadside pick-up points, the journey became an exercise in endurance. The absence of reliable alternatives once again highlighted the fragility of Dhaka's transport system, where even moderate disruptions quickly cascade into widespread inconvenience.

For many in Dhaka, the first working morning of the week became a familiar monsoon challenge, where relentless rain, transport shortages and the pressure to reach work on time combined to test both patience and preparation.

What is particularly troubling is that none of this is new. Dhaka has endured decades of monsoon flooding and transport disruption, yet meaningful structural improvements have struggled to keep pace with the city's rapid growth. Seasonal rainfall continues to expose deficiencies in drainage infrastructure, road maintenance and public transport planning, while commuters are left to absorb the economic and personal costs of delayed journeys and uncomfortable working days.

Tuesday’s rain was not merely another wet morning. It served as yet another reminder that the greatest challenge facing Dhaka is not the weather itself, but a city that continues to surrender to it.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department has forecast gusty winds and rain accompanied by thunderstorms over Dhaka and 12 other districts, and advised river ports in the affected areas to hoist Local Cautionary Signal No 1.

According to the morning forecast, Rangpur, Dinajpur, Bogura, Tangail, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and Sylhet may experience temporary south to south-easterly gusty winds of 45-60 km/h, accompanied by rain or thundershowers.
