High Court Clears 2,425 Cases in One Day, Sets New Record
Bangla Press Desk: The High Court on Thursday disposed of a record 2,425 long-pending cases in a single day following the step taken to reduce the case backlogs.
The criminal motion benches of the High Court disposed of 1,884 old criminal miscellaneous cases, while the writ motion benches resolved 541 long-pending writ petitions, bringing the total number of disposals to 2,425.
Md Shafiqul Islam, public relations officer (PRO) of the Supreme Court, confirmed the matter.
A total of 20,740 old cases have been resolved over the last four working days—dedicated once a week—since the special drive began to dispose of the old cases. This includes 15,172 old criminal miscellaneous cases and 5,568 old writ petitions.
This special drive is being conducted under the directive of the chief justice, aiming to streamline the judicial process. The initiative was launched to ensure swift justice for litigants, reduce the case backlog, and enhance the overall dynamism of the country's judiciary system.
The special drive to clear decades-old cases will continue.
Earlier on 7 May 2026, the judges of both the Criminal Motion and Writ Motion Benches of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court decided to prioritise these long-pending matters. Under this framework, they designated one specific day each week for resolving old criminal miscellaneous and writ cases. Source: daily Sun
