ICT Targets One-Year Deadline for July Uprising Trials

Bangla Press Desk: The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) is working at full capacity to complete investigations and trials related to the July Uprising within the next 12 months, said ICT Chief Prosecutor Aminul Islam on Tuesday.

Speaking at a press conference, Aminul Islam said his team and other concerned officials were working “day and night” to meet the goal.

Since 5 August 2024, six cases have already been disposed of, he said adding that further swift proceedings would raise questions over the standards.

More than 25 other cases are currently under trial, and investigation has been complete in total 40 cases. The prosecution expects to dispose of one or two cases each month.

In total, 109 complaints have been selected for investigations out of nearly 600 complaints filed across the country, Aminul Islam noted.

He also rejected claims that the accused were being selected out of personal vendetta or on the basis of a “hit list.”

The investigators are working with complete autonomy, and the prosecution does not interfere in their work. If any shortcoming or inconsistency is found in an investigation report it is sent back for re-investigation, the chief prosecutor said.
