India provided tuberculosis medicines worth approximately ₹2 crore to Sri Lanka.
Bangla Press Desk: India has provided essential medicines to Sri Lanka to ensure the continuity of treatment for tuberculosis (TB) patients and to prevent drug shortages. According to the *Daily Mirror*, the medicines were handed over at the Sri Lankan Ministry of Health in Colombo on Tuesday (October 7).
Santosh Jha, India's High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, handed over the medicines to Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa, the country's Minister of Health and Media. Dr. Hansaka Wijemuni, the Deputy Minister of Health and Media, was also present on the occasion.
India provided this assistance in response to a request from the Sri Lankan government. The entire process of dispatching the medicines was completed with the support of India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
The consignment sent by India contains approximately three tons of anti-TB medication. It includes over 1.5 million tablets with an estimated value of 52 million Sri Lankan rupees (equivalent to approximately 19.39 million Bangladeshi taka).
These medicines are used for the initial phase of tuberculosis treatment. They are expected to help maintain treatment continuity for patients in Sri Lanka and address supply shortages.
Earlier this year, in August, India provided 500 liters of Malathion insecticide to Sri Lanka to help combat dengue fever. That assistance was also provided at the request of the Sri Lankan government.
India and Sri Lanka have long-standing cooperation in the health sector. India has been providing support in various areas, including the construction of hospitals and health centers, the supply of medicines and medical equipment, and the training and capacity building of healthcare workers.
Furthermore, India has stood by Sri Lanka during emergencies and times when urgent medical assistance was required.
