Bangla Press Desk: The hanging body of a Jagannath University student has been recovered by his classmates from a student residence in Dhaka's Chankhanpul.
The young man, named Anik Chandra Pal, was a student in the 2024-25 academic year at the Department of Drawing and Painting. His hailed from Tahirpur in Sunamganj district and his family lives in a rented residence near Shibganj of Sylhet.
Subash Pal, assistant professor and assistant proctor of the Department of 3D Art and Design, said that Anik's body was recovered from the fourth floor of a building in PK Ganguly Lane in the Chankhanpul area around 10:30pm on Tuesday.
He told bdnews24.com that the body was found hanged by cloth from a rod for a fan in the room.
His classmates rushed him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.
“I went to the medical centre immediately after hearing of the incident. When his family was informed, they set off for Dhaka. Police are initially considering the incident as a suicide. After completing all the formalities, the body will be sent to his village home for cremation,” he said.
Payel Das, a student of the Department of Drawing and Painting from the 2018-19 academic year, told bdnews24.com: “Anik was a quiet sort. He would often stay in his room for long periods of time with headphones on.
“When his others staying at the residence knocked on his door in the afternoon and did not receive a response, they thought it was normal. And his roommate was also not there; he had gone to India.”
A friend contacted the other mess residents after not being able to reach Anik on the phone at night.
They knocked on the door for a long time and then grew suspicious when they received no response. A window was then broken and he was found hanged inside the room.
Bangshal Police chief Ashiq Iqbal told bdnews24.com, "Initially, we believe it to be a suicide. His family is on their way. After they arrive, the body will be handed over to the family after a postmortem."
