Jamaat Ameer Commits to Upholding the Ideals of the 'July Spirit'

Bangla Press Desk: Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer and Opposition Leader Shafiqur Rahman on Sunday vowed to uphold the "spirit of July" at any cost, while accusing the government of perpetuating discrimination and suppressing dissent.

"Whatever the cost, we will keep July alive," he said, claiming that the July movement was aimed at ending discrimination in Bangladesh.

Speaking as the chief guest at a discussion titled "We Will Give Our Lives, But Not Give Up July", organised by the Bangladesh Labour Party at the National Press Club, Shafiqur alleged that the current administration was repeating the actions of the previous Awami League government.

"We are seeing a photocopy of the previous fascist regime in the current government," he said, alleging that it was resorting to conspiracy, propaganda and force to suppress opposition parties.

Referring to the recent referendum, the opposition leader questioned why the government had not taken oath in line with its outcome, despite previously urging people to vote in favour of the proposal.

He also alleged that the government was ignoring the public mandate by forming a constitutional amendment committee instead of a constitutional reform council.

"If people take to the streets against this disregard for their verdict, the government will not be able to survive," he warned.

Shafiqur further criticised what he described as political appointments in the civil administration, alleging that party loyalty was being rewarded over merit in senior bureaucratic positions.
