Jamaat Announces Bid to Contest Presidential Election
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided to take part in the upcoming presidential election.
The decision was taken at a meeting of the party’s Central Executive Council chaired by Jamaat Ameer and Leader of the Opposition Dr Shafiqur Rahman at the party’s central office in the capital at 7pm on Saturday, according to a party press release issued on the day.
Jamaat Secretary General and former MP Mia Golam Parwar, along with members of the council, attended the meeting.
As per the press release, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will contest the presidential election. To this end, a meeting of the leaders of the 11-party alliance has been called for Sunday.
The decision on the opposition alliance’s candidate will be finalised at the meeting.
The press release also said the meeting discussed the overall political situation in the country, constitutional reform and various other issues, including the political programmes announced by the 11-party alliance.
