Jamaat-Led Alliance Submits Nomination Papers to Election Commission

Bangla Press Desk:  Thirteen female candidates nominated by the Jamaat alliance have arrived at the Election Commission (EC) to submit their nomination papers for the reserved women's seats in the 13th National Parliament.

The aspirants arrived at the Election Building in the capital's Agargaon and formally submitted their application forms to the Returning Officer, Md. Moin Uddin Khan on Monday morning (21 April). The nominated candidates from the Jamaat-e-Islami are: Nurunnessa Siddiqua, Marzia Begum, Sabikun Nahar Munni, Mardia Momtaz, Nazmun Nahar Nilu, Mahfuza Siddiqua, Sajeda Samad, and Shamsun Nahar.

From the alliance's partner parties, Monira Sharmin and Mahmuda Alam Mitu of the Jatiya Nagorik Party, and JAGPA Chairman Tasmia Pradhan submitted their papers.

In addition, Mahbuba Hakim, a female member of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish, and Rokeya Begum, the mother of Jabir Ibrahim, a child martyred in the July mass uprising, went to the Election Commission to submit their nominations as alliance candidates for these reserved seats.According to existing laws, the 50 reserved women's seats in Parliament are distributed proportionally based on the number of seats won by the victorious parties. Accordingly, the BNP alliance will receive 36 seats, the Jamaat alliance 13 seats, and the Independent alliance 1 seat this time.

According to the schedule announced by the EC, the scrutiny of nomination papers will take place on April 22 and 23. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is April 29. The date for voting has been set for two weeks later, on May 12.

The members of parliament elected to the general seats are eligible to vote in the election for MPs of the reserved seats. However, since a party or alliance nominates exactly the same number of candidates as the seats allocated to them, a vote is no longer required in this election.

The candidates will be declared elected unopposed on the day of the withdrawal of candidacy.
