Jamalpur Court Hands Death Penalty to Seven in Uncle-Nephew Murder Case

Bangla Press Desk: A Jamalpur court has sentenced seven people to death and seven others to life in prison for the murders of an uncle and his nephew following a dispute linked to a local election a decade ago.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Mohammad Nezam Uddin handed down the verdict on Thursday afternoon, public prosecutor Didarul Islam Didar said.

Those sentenced to death are Sakhawat, 32, Sohel, 30, Al Amin, 30, Saddam, 30, Ujjal, 30, Antor, 30, and Foyzur, 32.

The court also fined each of them Tk 50,000.

Seven others — Chan Mia, 51, Md Ziar, 46, Shah Alam, 42, Kawsar, 30, Rifat, 32, Sumon, 32, and Mostofa, 40 — were sentenced to life imprisonment and fined Tk 20,000 each.

The case dates back to the 2016 Adarvita Union Parishad election in Madarganj Upazila, when supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate Altafur Rahman Ata clashed with those of rebel candidate Ishaq.

Didarul said police went to Gajaria village on Apr 10 that year to arrest Mostofa, an Ishaq supporter and advisor to the Adarvita Union Awami League, in a case stemming from the clash.

Unable to find his house, officers asked Mohor Ali and his nephew Swapan Mia for directions.

The pair showed police where Mostofa lived, leading to his arrest, according to the prosecution.

After securing bail, Mostofa plotted to kill Mohor and Swapan in revenge, Didarul said.

On the night of May 16, Sakhawat and Sohel called the pair out of their home on the pretext of taking them to a musical gathering.

They were later taken to a jute field in the Kukurmari area of Jorkhali Union on another pretext, where the prosecution said they were killed by Mostofa’s associates.

Police recovered their bodies from the field three days later.
