JnU suspends 6 Jan classes, exams over students' union polls

Bangla Press Desk: The Jagannath University (JnU) authorities on Sunday issued a notification suspending all classes and examinations scheduled for 6 January, as the JnU Central Students' Union (JnUCSU) election is set to be held on that day.

According to the notification, classes and examinations will remain closed on 6 January to ensure the smooth conduct of the election. However, all offices of the university will remain open as usual.

The university authorities requested teachers, officials, employees, and others not to bring private vehicles to the campus on polling day.

Meanwhile, it was decided in a syndicate meeting on Sunday that no one would be allowed to enter the campus except voters. The university authorities will also issue fresh pass cards for journalists, observers, and volunteers to strengthen security, canceling the pass cards issued earlier.

Speaking about the election, Election Commissioner Prof Kaniz Fatema Kakoli said, “We are ready to hold the election on 6 January. All necessary preparations are underway, and we are hopeful of conducting it smoothly.”

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Rezaul Karim, said, “We want to deliver a model election to the nation. We have received full support from all levels of the university administration, including the faculty, to organise the election.”

Earlier, the JnUCSU election was scheduled for 30 December but was postponed by an emergency syndicate meeting following the death of former prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia.

Later, the university authorities rescheduled the election for 6 January in another syndicate meeting.
