Joint understanding essential for national security, development: Army Chief
  Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman has emphasised the need for joint understanding and effective leadership among stakeholders on critical national issues such as security, development, and strategic governance. He made the statement while addressing the closing ceremony of the Capstone Course at the National Defence College (NDC) on Thursday. Earlier the same day, at the Army Headquarters, he presented certificates of appreciation to army personnel involved in the rescue operation following the recent military aircraft crash at Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka. Attending the Capstone Course closing ceremony as the chief guest, the Army Chief remarked, “The National Defence College was established as a centre of excellence for defence, security, strategy, and development-related concerns. The Capstone Course has transformed the college into a unique platform where distinguished individuals can develop a unified perspective on national security and development.” He stated that the course aims to equip participants with the understanding necessary to lead on national issues and challenges, instilling a mindset that prioritises national interest.
General Waker-uz-Zaman further said, “I am pleased to see the increasing number of participants in the Capstone Course. This reflects the course’s relevance and the growing trust among various institutions.” He stressed the need for dynamic and reform-oriented leadership to strengthen institutional effectiveness and inclusivity, particularly in addressing the contemporary challenges of nation-building. Highlighting the rapidly changing global landscape, the Army Chief said, “In light of evolving geopolitics, natural disasters, and emerging national challenges, the Capstone Course plays a vital role in fostering strategic insight, collaboration, and knowledge-based leadership.” Addressing the Capstone Fellows, he noted, “Throughout this course, you have deeply analysed the country’s challenges and opportunities. Despite Bangladesh’s notable progress over the past five decades, several challenges remain. I believe you will face these head-on in your respective domains as strategic leaders and contribute significantly to national advancement.”
He added, “I believe NDC has successfully created a knowledge-rich environment for you. The friendships, mutual respect, and shared experiences you’ve gained here will positively impact your personal and professional lives. These connections will serve as a foundation for future progress and development.” The Army Chief expressed sincere gratitude to all Capstone Fellows and those involved in conducting the course for their contributions. A total of 45 fellows participated in the programme, including senior military officers, renowned academics, senior doctors, engineers, scientists, senior officials from government and private sectors, diplomats, journalists, and business representatives. The ceremony was also attended by senior military and civil officials from the armed forces and various ministries, NDC faculty and staff officers, and other national dignitaries.
Meanwhile, at the Army Headquarters, General Waker-uz-Zaman presented certificates of appreciation to army personnel for their commendable role in the rescue operation following the crash of a training aircraft on the premises of Milestone School and College in Uttara. This was confirmed in a post from the verified Facebook page of the Bangladesh Army. The post stated that the army personnel’s bravery and compassion while rescuing students, guardians, teachers, and staff under extremely dangerous conditions reflected the Army’s professional standards and would serve as an inspiration for all service members. At a press conference held at the Army Headquarters on Thursday afternoon, Colonel Md Shafiqul Islam from the Military Operations Directorate said that on 21 July, a Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft crashed on the campus of Milestone School and College in Uttara, Dhaka. The Bangladesh Army responded promptly, launching rescue operations and ensuring immediate medical assistance for the injured. He noted that army personnel conducted the rescue operation with utmost professionalism and dedication. A total of 41 injured individuals were treated at Dhaka CMH (Combined Military Hospital), with 11 still receiving treatment. Additionally, 29 army personnel sustained injuries during the operation, and one is currently hospitalised at CMH Dhaka. Fourteen bodies recovered from the site were brought to CMH and later handed over to the respective families.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
