Kidnapping, Extortion Case Lands NCP Youth Leader in Jail

Bangla Press Desk: A court in Dinajpur on Tuesday sent a central leader of the youth wing of the National Citizen Party (NCP) and four others to jail after rejecting their bail petitions in a case filed over the alleged kidnapping of a man and a demand for ransom.

The accused include Arif Moon, central joint organising secretary of Jubo Shakti, the youth wing of the NCP, Hasin Israk Mim, Azmir Hossain alias Prem, and two others who were later arrested on allegations of attempting to free the accused from police custody.

According to the case statement, Abdul Samad, a resident of Khoshalpur village in Dinajpur Sadar upazila, was allegedly abducted from the Gopalganj Panchmile area of Dinajpur town on Sunday night.

Acting on a complaint lodged by the victim's family, police conducted a raid on Monday afternoon and rescued Samad from the Gor-e-Shahid Boro Math area, arresting Arif Moon and two others at the scene.

Police said that after the suspects were brought to Dinajpur Police Station, several hundred leaders and activists of the NCP and its youth wing gathered outside the station, demanding their release.

The crowd chanted slogans and allegedly attempted to free the detainees from police custody. To prevent the situation from escalating, police initially locked the station's collapsible gate. However, following a scuffle, a group of supporters allegedly forced their way into the police station compound, heightening tensions. Police subsequently moved Arif Moon to the station lock-up to ensure his security.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar) said law enforcers quickly brought the situation under control, and the accused were produced before the court under tight security on Tuesday morning.

According to police, preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from a dispute over financial transactions related to a land deal. However, a case has been filed on charges of kidnapping and extortion, and the court ordered all five accused to be sent to jail pending further legal proceedings.
