Kishoreganj Funeral Without Son as Parole Request Rejected

Bangla Press Desk:  An Awami League supporter has been denied parole to attend his father’s funeral in Kishoreganj, sparking grief and outrage among his family.

Milon Mia, 40, has been behind bars in a political case, while his father, Ful Mia, 68, who had been suffering from cancer, died on Tuesday morning.

The family applied for Milon’s temporary release on parole through a lawyer, but the district administration rejected the request.

Instead, the authorities allowed the body to be taken to the prison so the son could see his father for the last time.

Around 10am on Wednesday, Ful Mia’s body was transported in a freezing van to Kishoreganj Jail, where Milon was allowed a brief final viewing at the prison gate.

Milon, a brick and sand trader from Panauullar Char village under Shibpur union of Bhairab upazila, is known as an Awami League supporter, but holds no party position.

Although he was not originally named in any case, he was arrested in 2024 and later shown as an accused in an explosives case.

Despite securing bail on 19 January this year, he could not be released from jail and was later shown arrested in another case under the Special Powers Act on 26 January.

Milon’s lawyer, Abdul Momen Bhuiyan Tuhin, said that an application seeking his client’s parole was submitted to the district magistrate on Tuesday, but the authorities refused, allowing only a final meeting at the jail gate.

Family members said Milon broke down in tears after seeing his father’s body. He was unable to attend the namaz-e-janaza or burial, which took place later in the day.

Recently, the parole issue drew attention after Bagerhat Chhatra League leader Jewel Hasan Saddam had to witness the corpses of his wife and infant son at the jail gate in Jashore. Source: daily Sun
