Land Minister Chooses Not to Use Police Protection
Bangla Press Desk: Land Minister Md Mizanur Rahman Minu said he never used a police escort even though his name appeared on a list of ministers whose security detail was being withdrawn.
The government recently decided to withdraw special police escorts allocated to 18 ministers, citing budget cuts, fuel savings and a shortage of police manpower and vehicles.
The minister's name was on that list but officials at the land ministry said he had never taken up the facility in the first place.
According to the ministry, Mizanur Rahman has travelled with only one gunman for both official and personal engagements since taking office. He never used a police escort convoy, a pilot car, or any additional security arrangement, meaning the withdrawal decision made no practical difference to his movements.
"I prefer to live simply. I want to stay connected with ordinary people. That's why I never feel the need for such (escort) facilities," Mr Minu told the Daily Sun.
The government withdrew the escort facility for 18 ministers this month, though it has kept the arrangement in place for a few senior ministers and one adviser to the prime minister, given the nature of their responsibilities.
