Bangla Press Desk: Robert Lewandowski is set to rejoin the Poland national team after a fallout earlier this year over being stripped of the captaincy, new head coach Jan Urban confirmed on Tuesday.
In June, the 36-year-old Barcelona striker—Poland’s all-time top scorer with 85 goals in 158 appearances—walked away from international duty following former coach Michal Probierz’s decision to hand the armband to Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski. Probierz resigned later that month, and Urban was appointed in July.
Urban told Polish broadcaster RMF FM that he had a direct phone conversation with Lewandowski, during which the striker confirmed his desire to return. “He said yes. So, we’ve taken a step forward,” Urban said.
However, the question of whether Lewandowski will reclaim the captaincy remains unresolved. “I don’t just want to speak with Robert, but also with Piotr Zielinski and the team council. The decision will be mine, but I want to hear from the players,” Urban explained.
