Mahanagar Express bound for Cox's Bazar; services begin today

Bangla Press Desk: The intercity train 'Mahanagar Express' is set to begin passenger services on the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route, with operations commencing on Monday, October 26.

A new schedule will also come into effect, allowing passengers from various intermediate stations along the Dhaka–Chattogram route to travel directly to Cox’s Bazar by train.

According to railway sources, the inaugural journey of the Mahanagar Express from Dhaka’s Kamalapur Railway Station to Cox’s Bazar will be flagged off by Railway Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam on Monday at 8:30 PM. As per the scheduled timetable, the train will depart from Dhaka at 8:30 PM and arrive in Cox’s Bazar at 6:00 AM the following morning.

The train is scheduled to reach Chattogram at 3:00 AM and will depart for Cox’s Bazar at 3:20 AM.

On its return journey, the train will depart from Cox’s Bazar at 8:00 AM, arriving in Chattogram at 12:20 PM. It will then continue toward Dhaka, with an expected arrival at Kamalapur Railway Station at 6:30 PM. With the extension of the Mahanagar Express route to Cox’s Bazar, passengers at stations including Dhaka Airport, Narsingdi, Bhairab Bazar, Ashuganj, Brahmanbaria, Akhaura, Kasba, Cumilla, Laksam, Nangalkot, and Feni will now have the option to travel directly to Cox’s Bazar by train.

Previously, the 'Cox’s Bazar Express' and 'Paryatak Express'—which operate on the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route—were non-stop services, meaning passengers at these intermediate stations could not travel directly to Cox’s Bazar. It is expected that the new route for the Mahanagar Express will make travel more convenient for passengers at these intermediate stations. This is also anticipated to increase the number of tourists traveling to Cox’s Bazar and boost railway revenue.

The Mahanagar Express will consist of 16 coaches on the Dhaka–Cox’s Bazar route.

The train will have a seating capacity ranging from 706 to 736. It will remain off-duty every Sunday. Railway sources have confirmed that all necessary preparations for the launch of the service on this new route have been completed. Ticket sales for this route began on October 16. It is expected that the launch of this new service will make travel to Cox's Bazar easier and more convenient for passengers in various areas between Dhaka and Chittagong.
