Man arrested in $5 million PPP fraud case in the U.S.
$5 million PPP fraud
Noman Sabit: Federal law enforcement authorities have arrested Randon “Romero” Williams, 40, a resident of West Bloomfield, Michigan, on charges of attempting to fraudulently obtain more than $5 million from the government’s Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to the indictment, between April 2020 and March 2021, Williams submitted six separate loan applications using fictitious or paper-only businesses in an effort to secure PPP funds. In those applications, he allegedly inflated or falsified key information, including the number of employees, payroll expenses, and business revenues—factors critical in determining loan eligibility and amounts. He is also accused of submitting fraudulent tax documents to support the applications.
U.S. Attorney Jerome F. Gorgon Jr. said the case marks one of the early major enforcement actions following the formation of the President’s Task Force to eliminate fraud. “We will take strong action against those who attempt to steal taxpayer money,” he stated.
Officials from the National Fraud Enforcement Division emphasized that individuals who exploit taxpayer-funded programs through fraud will be held accountable. The IRS Criminal Investigation division noted that while the PPP was designed to support businesses during a time of crisis, some individuals sought to abuse the program for personal gain.

If convicted, Williams could face serious penalties, including charges of wire fraud and money laundering. However, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
Meanwhile, in similar fraud cases across the country, several individuals in states including Iowa, North Carolina, and South Carolina have already been sentenced to prison, underscoring the federal government’s strict stance against pandemic-related fraud.
