Man Shot and Wounded by ICE Agent in New York City
ICE agent shot and wounded a man Thursday afternoon in New York City
Noman Sabit: A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and wounded a man Thursday afternoon in New York City, Mayor Zohran Mamdani confirmed.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) initially reported that a shooting involving federal law enforcement agents occurred at approximately 4 p.m. in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx. The department clarified that no NYPD officers were involved in the incident.
At approximately 6 p.m., officials confirmed to NewsNation that ICE agents had been involved in the shooting.
According to federal officials, the wounded man was an immigrant who had entered the United States illegally and had a criminal record.
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) stated Thursday night that the man had previously been convicted of grand larceny and had been arrested multiple times on allegations involving assault, robbery, drug possession, and weapons possession.
DHS said the man had previously been arrested on December 7, 2023, but was released several days later.
Federal law enforcement authorities said it was not immediately clear how many agents were involved in the shooting. The NYPD confirmed that the wounded man was transported to a nearby hospital.
Mayor Mamdani Condemns ICE Actions
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani strongly criticized ICE's actions, describing the shooting as an "incredibly serious situation."
In a social media post, Mamdani said he had already called President Donald Trump and would demand an end to ICE enforcement operations in New York City.
"I have called the President; when we speak I will demand that he ends all ICE enforcement actions in our city," Mamdani wrote. "I will not stand by while ICE agents terrorize our communities."
According to the mayor, preliminary reports indicated that ICE agents fired multiple rounds at the man's vehicle while he and his five-year-old child were inside.
The child was reportedly unharmed.
New York Leaders Demand Transparency and Investigation
New York City Council Speaker Julie Menin also expressed serious concerns about the incident and called for a full explanation from federal authorities.
"Federal authorities must provide us with a fully transparent account of what took place without delay," Menin wrote on social media.
She acknowledged the widespread fear that ICE enforcement activities have created among immigrant communities in New York City and warned that the latest incident could increase anxiety and uncertainty.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said she had been briefed on the shooting and expected a complete and transparent accounting of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, a New York Democrat, described the shooting as "deeply disturbing."
Schumer demanded that DHS immediately release all relevant body-camera footage and ensure a full, independent investigation.
"For months, I've warned that ICE's increasingly aggressive tactics put lives at risk," Schumer wrote on the social media platform X.
Similar ICE Shooting Reported in Texas
The shooting in the Bronx occurred less than a month after another ICE-involved shooting in Austin, Texas.
In that incident, ICE agents shot a 28-year-old Venezuelan national while he was delivering food. The man was subsequently charged with assault.
Although some Democratic lawmakers have called for the abolition of ICE, White House border czar Tom Homan has recently emphasized that the agency will continue its enforcement operations.
Homan declared that ICE is "not going anywhere."
Meanwhile, DHS said the Bronx shooting remains under investigation and that additional information will be released as it becomes available.
