Bangla Press Desk: The Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection has fined 120 establishments across 46 districts a total of Tk 9,93,200 following market inspections targeting essential commodities, including fruits and edible oils.
Yesterday (Tuesday), 61 teams from the Directorate conducted simultaneous raids on wholesale and retail businesses in these districts, including the Dhaka metropolitan area.
In a press release, the Directorate stated that these drives were conducted to stabilize the prices of essential goods, maintain normal supply chains, and prevent overcharging. During the inspections, officials verified various aspects, such as selling prices, the display of price lists, and the maintenance and issuance of purchase and sales vouchers.
Traders were instructed to refrain from creating artificial shortages, hoarding goods unjustifiably, or obstructing supply chains. They were also warned to display updated price lists in visible locations and to ensure accurate weights and measurements.
Fruit traders were directed to sell produce at fair and reasonable prices. They were also instructed to avoid mixing rotten or spoiled fruit with fresh stock and to refrain from using harmful chemicals or unauthorized substances on the fruit.
The Directorate advised consumers to check price lists and verify weights before making purchases. Consumers were also urged to check the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), production dates, and expiry dates where applicable, and to collect receipts or vouchers for their purchases.
Consumers were encouraged to report any irregularities or instances of fraud encountered while shopping by calling the Directorate’s hotline at 16121. The Directorate stated that these monitoring activities would continue to ensure market discipline, fair pricing, and a steady supply of goods.
