Marshall issues stark warning ahead of BPL
Bangla Press Desk: The independent chair of the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s newly formed Integrity Unit, Alex Marshall, has clarified his position on the exclusion of several cricketers from the upcoming BPL auction and reaffirmed his commitment to releasing evidence once the ongoing “live investigation” is concluded. Marshall also revealed plans to work with Bangladeshi authorities to help introduce criminal legislation targeting corruption in sport.
In a rare and heavily debated move, nine players were removed from this year’s BPL auction, prompting legal notices, appeals, and widespread public scrutiny. The auction itself drew further criticism after several franchise tables reportedly included individuals “known for wrongdoing” in various areas of Bangladesh cricket. Despite this, Marshall insisted that anyone who may have slipped past the safeguards will eventually be caught by strengthened integrity measures.
“I have given advice to the governing council, based on reading the 900-page report, that some people should not be invited to this edition of the BPL. Some are players, some are not,” Marshall said on Thursday. “I’ve given that advice to try and prevent problems happening. Those people are not banned from cricket. They’re just not invited to this event.”
He stressed that names and case details will only be disclosed once due process is complete. “I’ll only give details of the case if and when they either plead guilty to breaches of the code or a tribunal has found them guilty. Then the decision is published online so everyone can see the full detail.”
Marshall confirmed he is exploring legislative avenues to strengthen Bangladesh’s deterrents against corruption. “I hope in the next few months to work with the authorities in Bangladesh, who I hope will introduce criminal legislation that would indeed make people who did what you’re describing criminal,” he said.
The Integrity Unit chief also said that franchise owners participating in BPL 12 will face thorough scrutiny. “Owners are among the people who need to ensure this event is clean and successful. They will all be looked at. Everyone who works for them will be looked at, and where the money is coming from will be looked at.”
In the build-up to the tournament, Marshall will personally meet every team owner, manager, captain, and essential staff. “They will be left in no doubt that I want to work with them for a safe event — and what the consequences will be if, through their ownership, bad people get at this event,” he said.
Asked specifically about the presence of suspected individuals at auction tables, Marshall hinted at imminent consequences. “Some people are going to have some unpleasant surprises between now and the start of the BPL,” he warned. “There are people who may well have got away with breaching the anti-corruption code at recent editions. Those people will be targeting this event, probably still thinking they can get away with it. Me and my team, with the help of the ICC, are taking a lot of actions to cut those people off.”
Marshall also addressed longstanding concerns that BCB ACU members in previous BPL seasons were paid directly by the franchises, a system widely seen as a conflict of interest. He confirmed the practice has now ended. “You cannot become reliant or special friends with franchise owners, management or players, because the next day you might be investigating them for a credible allegation. So there will be a separation,” he said.
Marshall’s warnings
* “I have something like a 98% success rate because I've done the homework and when it goes before a tribunal, people are nearly always found guilty in my cases.”
* “Some people are going to have some unpleasant surprises between now and the start of the BPL.”
* “Previous BPL editions had breaches and negative history, which are currently under live investigation.”
* “No phones, no communication devices, and no smartwatches from arrival to end of match inside the Player & Match Officials Area (PMOA).”
* “Entry permitted only for players, match officials and essential personnel with PMOA accreditation.”
* “No exceptions for influential, powerful, or “big” individuals. Any breach will result in immediate ejection and cancellation of accreditation for the entire BPL.”
* “Players must report any corrupt approach directly and immediately to the Integrity Unit.”
* “Aware of common global “signals” used in fixing, such as a deliberate wide or changing bat-handle colour.”
