Measles Outbreak Claims Eight More Children in 24 Hours

Bangla Press Desk:  The number of deaths linked to measles rose to 902 as eight more children died with measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours until Saturday 8:00am.

Of the total fatalities, 99 were confirmed cases, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) bulletin.

As many as 728 suspected measles infections were recorded in the 24-hour period. Meanwhile, the total number of suspected measles infections rose to 141,776.

In the meantime, 70 confirmed cases of measles were recorded in a day, bringing the total number of confirmed infections to 17,800.

Since mid-March this year, 123,494 children admitted to the hospitals across the country. However, 119,089 got recovered and released from hospitals among them, said DGHS data.

In response to the nationwide measles outbreak, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has already vaccinated over 19.25 million children since April this year and kept the campaign ongoing due to the high infection rate across the country.

Measles is a highly contagious viral disease, which affects individuals of all ages. It is one of the leading causes of death among young children globally.

Meanwhile, two more people died of dengue and 730 dengue patients were hospitalised in the past hours, the health authorities also reported.

With the latest update, the number of total dengue-related deaths rose to 67 and the number of hospitalisation due to the mosquito-borne disease increased to 23,173 since January this year.
