Minneapolis killing: Noem under pressure from both Republicans and Democrats
U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem
Noman Sabit: U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is facing intense political pressure over her handling of the killing of Alex Pretti in Minneapolis and her comments in the aftermath. Lawmakers from both Republican and Democratic parties have publicly expressed dissatisfaction with her role and statements.
Anger has mounted particularly over Noem’s decision to label Pretti a “domestic terrorist.” Multiple videos show that moments before he was shot, an agent removed a gun from his waistband and that he was holding a phone in his hand. Despite this, the Department of Homeland Security claimed he intended to harm law enforcement officers.
Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina said Noem’s actions demonstrate “disqualifying incompetence” and that she should not remain in her position. He also called for de-escalation in Minneapolis and sharply criticized former Border Patrol commander Gregory Bovino.
In response to the incident, the Senate Homeland Security Committee has summoned the heads of ICE, Customs and Border Protection, and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Noem is also scheduled to testify before several congressional committees in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, House Democrats have intensified efforts to impeach Noem. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has urged President Trump to remove her from office. Senator John Fetterman has also publicly called for her dismissal.
Despite the growing backlash, President Trump has reiterated his support for Noem, saying he believes she is “doing a good job.” However, top Republican leaders have stopped short of offering the same level of support.
