Mithun urges cricket–politics separation amid World Cup uncertainty
Bangla Press Desk: Dhaka Capitals captain Mohammad Mithun has urged cricket administrators on Friday to ensure that Bangladesh’s participation in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is not influenced by political considerations, stressing that player safety must remain the board’s primary responsibility.
Speaking to the media on Friday, Mithun called for a clear separation between sport and politics, warning against depriving players of the opportunity to compete on the world stage.
“Ensure the players’ safety — that is the board’s responsibility,” Mithun said. “Why should players miss the World Cup? Political instability should remain in politics. For God’s sake, do not mix cricket with politics. Keep politics separate, keep cricket separate.”
Bangladesh’s participation in the tournament has come under uncertainty following the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) decision not to travel to India under the current circumstances. The board has cited concerns over the safety and security of the team and has formally requested the International Cricket Council (ICC) to consider alternative arrangements.
Despite assurances of heightened security from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the BCB has maintained its stance and requested that Bangladesh’s matches be relocated to another host nation, Sri Lanka.
