Bangla Press Desk: Following the deaths of three young people in a collision involving a speeding Mini Cooper in Kerala, India, an old video of the 19-year-old driver, Suhail Sajiv, has surfaced. Reports indicate the video shows him driving at speeds of 220 km/h. Meanwhile, a video of his mother discussing gifting the luxury car to her son for his birthday has circulated on social media.
The accident occurred early Sunday (October 11) near Nedumbassery in Kerala's Ernakulam district. Police have arrested Suhail in connection with the incident.
Police stated that three young people—Devika (21), Gopika (22), and Ijaz (21)—were traveling on a scooter towards the airport area. Around 1:45 AM, the speeding Mini Cooper struck the scooter from behind, throwing all three onto the road. Reports suggest the car dragged the scooter for approximately 100 meters after the impact.
Devika and Gopika died at the scene. Ijaz, who was critically injured, later succumbed to his injuries in the hospital.
Police have registered a case against Suhail for culpable homicide not amounting to murder. Allegations have also been raised that he was driving under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
**Mini Cooper Gifted to Son for Birthday**
A video circulating on social media shows Suhail's mother speaking about purchasing the Mini Cooper for her son. Speaking in Malayalam, she mentioned that the car had been a long-held dream of Suhail's and noted that the entire family was happy to fulfill his wish.
She further explained that she had originally considered buying the car around December—coinciding with his birthday—but eventually arranged for it as a gift for him.
Meanwhile, police have reportedly obtained other videos of Suhail showing him driving at speeds exceeding 200 km/h.
**Outrage Over Alleged Comments After the Accident**
Discussions have also arisen regarding certain comments Suhail allegedly made to the police following the accident. It is alleged that he asked the police, "What are roads for? For driving cars, right?" He reportedly also remarked that his father would handle the situation.
These alleged comments have further fueled public outrage regarding the fatal accident.
Kerala’s Excise and Taxes Minister, M. Liju, has directed officials to take action against the bars accused of serving alcohol to Suhail prior to the accident. Police suspect that Suhail had consumed alcohol at multiple bars before the collision.
Under Kerala law, the minimum legal drinking age is 23. Therefore, serving alcohol to 19-year-old Suhail would constitute a violation of the law.
