MPO teachers to launch continuous sit-in protest from Sunday

Bangla Press Desk: Teachers and staff under the government’s Monthly Pay Order (MPO) scheme will begin a continuous sit-in demonstration from Sunday demanding a house rent allowance equivalent to 20 percent of their basic salary.
The programme is being organised by the Alliance for Nationalisation of MPO-listed Institutions at the National Press Club from Sunday, said its member secretary Delwar Hossain Azizi.
The government raised the house rent allowance by Tk500 on 30 September, but the leaders rejected the increase on 5 October. Following this, the education ministry reportedly proposed raising the amount to Tk2,000 or Tk3,000.
“We have rejected the Tk500 increase. MPO-listed teachers and staff want a rent allowance of at least 20 percent of their basic salary,” said Azizi.
Along with the house-rent allowance, the protesters are also demanding an increase in the medical allowance from Tk500 to Tk1,500 and the festival allowance from 50 percent to 75 percent of their basic salary.
The demonstrators said the sit-in will continue until their demands are met and a government gazette is issued.
