Nahid, Patwary served show-cause notices for breaching election code
Bangla Press Desk: National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam and the party’s Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary have been served show-cause notices over allegations of violating the electoral code of conduct in the 13th national parliamentary election.
Separate letters signed by Returning Officer and Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury were issued to them on Sunday, asking them to explain the alleged violations, Dhaka Additional Divisional Commissioner Azmul Haque said.
According to the notices, all billboards must be removed from different parts of the city by 9:30am on Monday. The candidates have also been asked to submit written explanations by 11am, either in person or through a representative, at the office of the returning officer, explaining why punitive action should not be taken against them for breaching the code of conduct.
However, NCP Election Media Subcommittee Chief Mahabub Alam said the show-cause notices were issued in violation of established procedures.
In a statement, the NCP said banners bearing the slogan “Stay in favour of ‘Yes’ to reform the state” were displayed, which, according to the party, did not constitute any campaign urging voters to support Nahid Islam or Nasiruddin Patwary under the ‘Shapla Koli’ symbol.
The party claimed that the existing rules governing referendum-style campaigns were not violated in any way and that there had been no breach of the election code of conduct.
