Nana Patekar’s Untold Marriage Story: Living Apart for 35 Years Without Divorce
Bangla Press Desk: Following reports of Bollywood actor Nana Patekar’s death, attention has turned to his long-married life, the quiet struggles of his wife, Neelakanti Patekar, and the lesser-known chapters of their relationship.
On screen, Nana Patekar was known for his commanding personality and powerful performances. Away from the spotlight, however, his life was marked by love, the profound grief of losing a child, marital tensions and a complicated relationship that endured despite years of living apart.
Nana’s wife, Neelakanti, is also a familiar name in Marathi theatre and cinema. Her life has been equally eventful, shaped by her passion for acting, her efforts to establish herself professionally and several difficult personal experiences.
A Theatre Meeting That Led to Love
Nana Patekar and Neelakanti first met through Marathi theatre. At the time, Neelakanti was working as an officer at a bank while pursuing her deep interest in acting. Their association through theatre gradually developed from friendship into love.
The couple married in 1978, beginning a new chapter filled with hopes, dreams and promises of a life together. Their marriage had its happy moments, but it was also marked by a tragedy that few parents can easily overcome.
They had a son after their marriage, but their first child died at just two and a half years old. Losing their young son became one of the most painful chapters of their lives. They later welcomed their second son, Malhar Patekar.
The grief of losing a child, family responsibilities and a relationship that changed over time made their personal journey far from smooth.
Studied Physics and Passed the IIT Entrance Exam
Neelakanti’s journey into acting has its own distinctive story. Born in Pune, she spent her childhood moving between different cities because her father worked in the Central Excise Department.
She was also academically gifted and studied physics. At her father’s urging, she sat for the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) entrance examination and passed. However, when it came to choosing her career, her heart remained with acting and theatre.
Despite having the opportunity to pursue what was considered a secure and established profession, Neelakanti chose to follow her passion for acting. She eventually made Marathi theatre an important part of her creative life.
That decision helped her establish herself as a skilled stage performer.
Neelakanti Built Her Own Identity in Acting
Through regular performances in Marathi theatre, Neelakanti demonstrated her abilities as an actress. In 1973, she won a gold medal in the Best Actress category at the Maharashtra State Drama Competition, an important recognition of her talent.
She later moved from the stage to Marathi cinema. In 1989, she played the female lead opposite director-actor Sachin Pilgaonkar in Aatmavishwas. Her performance in the film earned her the Maharashtra government’s Best Actress award.
After staying away from acting for an extended period, Neelakanti returned to the screen in the historical film Chhaava. Starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, the film featured her as Dharau. Her return gave audiences an opportunity to rediscover her talent.
Not Living Under the Same Roof, but Still Legally Married
Nana Patekar and Neelakanti’s relationship has long attracted public curiosity because, despite remaining married, the couple reportedly lived separately for many years. Several recent reports have put the duration of their separation at around 35 years.
However, they did not legally divorce. Their situation illustrates the distinction between living apart and formally ending a marriage.
In an interview quoted by The Indian Express, Nana Patekar reportedly reflected that there had been many happy moments in their lives and that they had stood by each other through difficult times. Over time, however, differences developed between them that they were unable to resolve, and they gradually grew apart.
The essence of Nana’s account was that they remained married but lived separately.
Various explanations for their distance have circulated over the years. Reports have attributed to Nana comments about differences in their personalities and ways of thinking. However, the full details of their private relationship have never been made public.
The Loss of Their First Child and the Distance in Their Relationship
The death of Nana and Neelakanti’s first child frequently comes up in discussions of their marriage. Losing a child of just two and a half years is a profound emotional trauma for any family, and it was a devastating experience for them as well.
However, it cannot be established with certainty how much the loss influenced their decision to live separately. No definitive, reliably established explanation is available on this point. It would therefore be inappropriate to treat their personal tragedy as the sole reason for the distance in their relationship.
Their second son, Malhar Patekar, later became an important part of their family. Although their personal lives have attracted considerable attention, not every aspect of their family relationships has been made public.
Despite living separately for many years, they did not pursue a legal divorce. Their decision may have reflected their personal circumstances, individual understanding or family considerations. Without further statements from the couple, however, it is difficult to draw firm conclusions.
Nana’s Relationship with Manisha Koirala: Friendship or Romance?
Another name that frequently appears in discussions of Nana Patekar’s personal life is actress Manisha Koirala.
During the 1990s, speculation about their relationship spread widely in Bollywood. They appeared together in several films, including Agni Sakshi and Khamoshi: The Musical, both released in 1996. They later worked together again in Yugpurush in 1998.
Their on-screen chemistry, professional closeness and apparent understanding of each other fuelled rumours about their relationship. Entertainment media at the time also carried reports about an alleged romance.
However, earlier reports and subsequent accounts do not provide conclusive evidence that Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala were formally involved in a romantic relationship.
What Did the Agni Sakshi Writer Say About Their Relationship?
In September 2026, past discussions about Nana Patekar and Manisha Koirala’s relationship resurfaced when Ranbir Pushp, the writer of Agni Sakshi, spoke about their dynamic.
He recalled that Nana and Manisha shared a sense of closeness and mutual understanding while working on the film. According to his recollection, the two discussed their performances and exchanged views on how to portray particular scenes and characters. He felt that this understanding was reflected in their on-screen performances.
However, Ranbir Pushp did not describe their relationship as romantic.
Asked whether he had noticed anything suggesting a relationship beyond friendship, he said he had never viewed them that way at the time. Although he later read media reports about their alleged romance, he had not personally witnessed anything that convinced him their relationship went beyond friendship and professional understanding.
Separate Lives, No Divorce: The Last Chapter of Nana and Neelakanti’s Marriage
Although Nana Patekar’s public profile was extensive, he remained reserved about his private life. His acting, public positions and performances in numerous films repeatedly attracted attention, but he generally avoided discussing intimate family and marital matters in detail.
According to various reports, Nana and Neelakanti lived separately but never divorced. Public biographical accounts have continued to identify Neelakanti as his wife and describe their marital status as married.
