Ema Alice: A new piece of legislation introduced Tuesday in the New York City council would increase the city's minimum wage to $30 an hour, nearly double its current rate and the highest in the whole of the United States, according to Councilmember Sandra Nurse.

If approved, the measure would impact more than a million workers across the city earning the current $17 hourly minimum wage, a rate that she said amounts to $500 weekly in take-home pay. “That's essentially a crisis for most people on a weekly basis,” said Nurse, the bill's sponsor.

The bill aligns with one of the key campaign pillars of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who explicitly called for a $30 minimum wage ahead of his election win in November. Mamdani, during his campaign, said he would strive to ensure “New Yorkers have a high quality of life, top-tier public safety, the ability to pay rent and afford child care.” Republicans appeal decision that threw out NYC's only GOP-controlled House district One of the most expensive cities on Earth follows Mamdani affordability victory with free childcare

Under Nurse's proposal, the minimum wage increase would come in increments, ultimately reaching $30 an hour by 2030, she said. Employers with more than 500 employers would pay workers $20 per hour by 2027 and $30 an hour by 2030. And those with fewer than 500 employers would pay $21.50 by 2028 and $30 by 2032.

The last significant wage increase in New York City came in the 2010s, when it rose to $15 an hour for companies with 11 or more employees. This year, it rose to $17, Gothamist reported. The bill proposal has reportedly divided workers and business owners in the city.

Proponents of the bill have said the increase would help to rebalance the livability of low-wage workers amid a citywide affordability crisis. But some business owners have contended that it could force small operations to shut down. It also comes during nationwide economic volatility under a Trump administration that has issued sweeping trade tariffs and lobbed threats to impose even more, and as energy costs continue to rise while the shipping of fuel and other goods are halted amidst the Middle East war. Nurse said Tuesday that New York City's minimum wage lags behind cities such as Flagstaff, Arizona, where the minimum is $18.35; Denver, where it is $19.29; and Seattle, where it is $21.30, Gothamist reported. Though some hospitality workers in Los Angeles are set to receive a $30 minimum wage by 2028, no city in the U.S. currently has a $30 minimum wage, according to the National Employment Law Project.

“We are so behind,” Nurse said. “And the cost of living in those cities is significantly lower than what New York City workers are facing.” Though the proposal mirrors direct calls from Mamdani during his recent mayoral campaign, a spokesperson for the mayor's office did not explicitly throw support behind the bill.

“Mayor Mamdani believes that all New Yorkers need to make a living wage," spokesperson Dora Pekec said in a statement. “As the administration reviews this specific legislation, the mayor remains committed to tackling the cost-of-living crisis using every tool at the city’s disposal,” Pekec said.
