Newborn dies as syndicate holds up ambulance in Shariatpur
  Bangla Press Desk: A newborn has died as a local syndicate in Shariatpur allegedly blocked an ambulance carrying the critically ill baby to a Dhaka hospital for better treatment. The incident took place in Sadar upazila on Thursday. Despite repeated pleas from the baby’s relatives, the ambulance was held up for 40 minutes, causing the death of the newborn, the family said. According to the police and the family, Ruma Begum, wife of Nur Hossain Sardar from the Koneshwar area of Damudya upazila in the district, gave birth to a baby boy through a caesarean section at New Metro Clinic in Sadar upazila on Thursday afternoon.
Since the newborn was suffering from breathing problems and cold-related complications, physicians recommended taking him to Dhaka for better treatment.Later, the family hired Dhaka-based ambulance driver Md Mosharaf Mia for Tk5,000 from near the clinic. In the evening, as they set off for the capital, local ambulance drivers Sabuj Dewan and Abu Taher Dewan intercepted the vehicle, claiming that no ambulance outside their syndicate could operate on this route. They then dragged Mosharaf out of the vehicle, seized the keys, and assaulted him. Shefali Begum, grandmother of the newborn baby, said, “If my grandson had been taken to Dhaka in time, he could have survived. They removed the oxygen mask from him. My grandson died because of them. I want justice.”
Ranu Akter, a relative of the baby, said, “We hired a Dhaka-based ambulance for Tk5,000. Several people, including Sabuj and Taher, held us up for 40 minutes. They ignored all our pleas. They intercepted the ambulance, taking its keys forcibly. They caused the death of the baby.”Ambulance driver Mosharaf said, “I agreed to go to Dhaka on the return trip, but some locals forced me out of the vehicle and took the keys. I told them they could make the trip themselves if they wanted, but the patient’s relatives wanted me to go. The people assaulted me.” Sadar Palong Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Helal Uddin said the family has yet to lodge any complaint about the incident. “If a complaint is filed and the preliminary investigation finds the involvement of any syndicate or individuals, legal action will be taken.
