No media outlet will be shut down under the interim government: Mahfuj

Bangla Press Desk: Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam has assured that the interim government will not shut down any media outlet, emphasising the administration’s commitment to press freedom and pluralism.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Association of Television Channel Owners (ATCO) at the Secretariat on Wednesday, Mahfuz Alam said that during the past 15 years, television channel approvals were often granted based on political considerations rather than merit.
“Over the last decade and a half, TV channels were approved politically, showing clear bias,” he stated. “The policy of this interim government is clear—no media organisation will be closed.”
The adviser further said that the government aims to ensure freedom of expression for all perspectives, including those opposing authoritarianism.
“We want multiple voices to be heard. Since no media will be shut down, media outlets that support democracy and oppose fascism should also have space,” he added.
Highlighting the government’s immediate priorities, Mahfuj Alam said the Journalist Protection Act is being treated as a top priority and is expected to be completed before the upcoming election.
“We want to frame the Media Commission and Journalist Protection Act based on input from all stakeholders,” he said. “With elections approaching, ensuring journalists’ safety is crucial.”
Addressing media owners, the adviser urged them to share benefits with their employees in line with the incentives and tax relief they receive from the government.
“Media owners who enjoy government facilities and tax benefits should ensure similar welfare measures for their staff,” he said.
Mahfuj Alam reaffirmed that the interim administration’s goal is to promote responsible, independent, and diverse journalism—where no voice is silenced and every citizen has access to free information.
