Nomination papers of 11 candidates, including Jamaat nominee, cancelled in Cumilla
Bangla Press Desk: The scrutiny of nomination papers has been completed for Cumilla-1, Cumilla-2 and Cumilla-3 constituencies for the upcoming 13th National Parliamentary Election.
During the verification process, the nomination papers of 11 candidates, including a Jamaat-e-Islami nominee, were cancelled.
The scrutiny took place until Friday noon at the office of Cumilla Deputy Commissioner and District Returning Officer Md Reza Hasan.
Following the verification, nomination papers of 11 out of a total of 31 candidates in these three parliamentary constituencies were declared invalid. In most cases, allegations of forged voter signatures were found in the nomination documents.
In Cumilla-3 constituency, the nomination of Jamaat-e-Islami candidate Yusuf Hakim Sohel was cancelled due to an incomplete affidavit and the absence of all required information. The affidavit did not include the candidate’s citizenship details, nor did it clearly state whether he holds dual citizenship.
Officials concerned said the scrutiny of nomination papers in the remaining constituencies of the district would be completed in phases.
District Returning Officer Md Reza Hasan said no information may be concealed in the affidavit and that all details must be provided accurately. However, he added that candidates whose nominations have been cancelled will have the opportunity to appeal to the Election Commission to seek restoration of their candidacy.
