Normal Life Grinds to a Halt in Manipur Amid 48-Hour Strike
Bangla Press Desk: India’s Manipur state has been rocked by the brutal killing of three women. A 48-hour general strike is underway across the state, demanding justice for the three civilians who were killed while collecting firewood and calling for better security. The shutdown has brought normal life to a standstill.
The attack took place on Sunday (October 18) while the women were collecting firewood near the foothills of the Uyumpok and Nongshum areas in Imphal East district.
The identities of the three victims have been established as Leirenpakpam Inaobi Meitei, 40, and Aribam Noni Meitei, 35, both from Nongshum, and Khithrimayum Sushil Singh, 30, from Uyumpok Mamang Leikai. Several other people were also injured in the incident.
The Native People Committee Manipur (NPC) called the strike to protest the killings and demand punishment for the armed group allegedly involved.
From early morning, supporters staged pickets in various areas, including Kanchipur, Khurai and Patsoi, in support of the shutdown.
Earlier, grieving villagers and family members staged an emotional protest outside the residence of Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, bringing the bodies of two women to demand justice. Police had detained several people in connection with the incident, but they were later released.
An opposition delegation has already met the chief minister, calling for steps to bring the situation under control and ensure security.
However, emergency services, healthcare facilities and religious activities have been exempted from the strike to ensure that people can access essential services.
