Oil, gas, and mineral exploration to begin in Greenland: Trump
Bangla Press DeskThe: United States is showing renewed interest in Greenland's vast natural resources and strategic location. US President Donald Trump has announced that preparations are underway to explore the island for oil, gas, and mineral resources.
At the same time, he has highlighted Greenland's importance to the security of both the United States and Europe.
Trump asserts that Greenland holds immense quantities of oil and other natural resources. In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, he stated that large-scale exploration for oil, gas, and minerals is set to begin on the island; however, he did not provide details on how the US would participate in this endeavor. Greenland is also militarily and strategically significant due to its geographical location. Situated in the Arctic region between Russia and North America, the island could play a crucial role in missile defense and surveillance. Greenland's location is also considered vital for the implementation of the "Golden Dome" missile defense system proposed by Trump.
Furthermore, the island is believed to possess vast, untapped mineral resources.
The potential opening of new shipping lanes—resulting from Arctic ice melt caused by climate change—has also heightened Greenland's economic and strategic importance. Previously, in August, reports of preparatory activities by a US oil company in a remote area of East Greenland sparked concern among local residents and authorities. In the same post, Trump emphasized that Greenland is critical to the security of the United States and Europe.
He further noted that Greenland's location would be vital for defense in the event of a future attack on the United States. He also spoke of establishing defense systems there to counter various aerial threats, including drones and missiles.
Trump added that Greenland's location offers the US strategic positioning and surveillance capabilities that would be difficult to find anywhere else in the world. Last September, the United States signed a security agreement with leaders from Greenland and Denmark. Under this 10-page agreement, there are plans to establish two new military bases in the southern and eastern regions of Greenland. Currently, the United States maintains the Pituffik military base in North Greenland. Under a new plan, two additional bases will be established—one at Narsarsuaq in the south and another at Mestersvig in the east. This move could expand the US military presence in Greenland.
