Over 1,000 lower court judges to be promoted
Bangla Press Desk: The Supreme Court has decided to promote over 1,000 lower court judges, in one of the largest judicial promotion rounds in recent years.
As per the decision, 300 lower court judges will be elevated to the rank of district judge and 200 to the rank of additional district judge, and 500 other judges of the lower court will also get promotions.
Meanwhile, the government has appointed 41 deputy attorneys general (DAGs) and 67 assistant attorneys general (AAGs) to represent the state in the Appellate Division and High Court Division of the Supreme Court.
The decision to promote the lower court judges across the country was taken in a full court meeting of the judges of both the Appellate Division and High Court Divisions held in the conference room of the Supreme Court Administration Building on Tuesday.
It is learnt that, in addition to the promotions, various important administrative decisions were taken in the full court meeting. The list of promoted judges will be sent to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for the next proceedings.
Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed presided over the meeting, where 20 issues on the agenda were discussed. However, due to time constraints, the court’s annual judicial calendar was not finalised.
The meeting also discussed the case of Judge Mosammat Kamrunnahar, who lost her judicial powers following a controversial verdict and controversial remarks made during the verdict in the high-profile Banani Raintree Hotel rape case. The Judicial Administration Committee has been tasked with reviewing whether her judicial powers should be restored.
Meanwhile, the Law Ministry issued separate notifications on Tuesday, announcing the appointments of 41 deputy attorneys general and 67 assistant attorneys general.
On 8 August last year, President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed Md Asaduzzaman as the attorney general and three others as additional attorneys general. Five days later, nine lawyers were appointed as deputy attorneys general.
Subsequently, on 28 August 2024, some 66 deputy attorneys general and 161 assistant attorneys general were appointed. This article was originally published on the Daily Sun.
