People to vote for secular Bangladesh

Bangla Press Desk:  BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the people would vote for a truly secular Bangladesh in the 13th parliamentary election.

He made the remarks while attending a view exchange meeting with Christian Forums’ leaders at BNP chairperson’s office in the capital’s Gulshan.

“We all believe in the Bangladeshi nationality and I believe that the people will exercise their fran-chise in favour of a truly secular Bangladesh in the upcoming general election,” he said.

Mentioning Bangladesh as a non-communal country, he said a section of people were trying to bring unnecessary issues to the forefront and attempting to undermine the spirit of 1971.

About the Proportional Representation (PR) system in the election, he asked the authorities to leave it to the next parliament.

Meanwhile, Amanullah Aman, a member of BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s advisory council, said that the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman would return home immediately and lead the election campaign for the next national polls.

He made the announcement while addressing a programme at the National Press Club in the capital.

The BNP leader also said a political party that played controversial role in 1971 was now devising a plot to prolong the national election with the PR issue.

The nationalist forces and the family of Ziaur Rahman have always stood by the people in protect-ing their voting rights and democracy, Aman said, adding, they would continue to do so for holding the next election in right time.
